Hitech Glazing to Cut Down your Home Energy Wastage
Hitech Glazing to Cut Down your Home Energy Wastage.
Most of you may not be aware that the amount of heat energy lost through glass windows and doors may account for about 30% of the total energy bill. Older homes are fitted with clear single glazing which may be 3 mm to 4 mm thick. The clear glass would allow the maximum natural light and also sun’s direct radiant warmth inside your home if the orientation is southwesterly. (Assuming a location experiencing extreme winter climate).This glass would not afford you any protection for you from the loss of indoor heat from all possible processes ie Radiation, conduction and convection.
Is the use of Glass in your house essential?
Since time immemorial humans have made their abodes pleasant to live in. The unbelievably beautiful prehistoric cave paintings found the world over bear witness to this. The advancements have brought forward new material and technology and by Middle Ages the use of glass in places of worship and dwellings of landed gentry has commenced. Today the advanced modern architecture has found glass a material that it cannot do without to highlight the finer artistic and aesthetic features. But along with this came many inherent disadvantages like heat loss in winter, heat gain in summer through all means of heat transfer.
How to prevent Heat Loss through glass!
It has been said that heat loss takes place only by three means ie. Conduction, Convection and Radiation. If so the only way to control too is to clamp down on this natural phenomenon! Modern science has come out with a few solutions to over come these draw backs. Some of these are;
- Double Glazing where two sheets of clear glass is separated by a layer of air. And with sealed periphery.
- Double glazing with the gap in between evacuated and filled with an inert gas such as Argon, Xenon, or Krypton. CO 2 also may be used. The best results in this design are achieved by the use of Krypton which gas however is exorbitantly priced. The commonly used compromise is therefore is Argon.
- Double glazing with a low emissivity coating (silver or tin oxide) on the inner surface of the glass away from the conditioned space. In the case of air conditioning the inner surface of the glass lining the outdoors is coated.
- Triple Glazing with three glass sheets with air or gas filled gaps in between.
- The Triple glazing with a low emissivity coating on two glass panes, exhibits the best performance.
.
Which is the most effective?
The most effective is the Triple Glazing which can act as a good insulation with or even without the low e-coating. However they are heavy and therefore are difficult to handle, needs heavier structural designs and also are prone to damage during construction whereas double glazing with low emissivity coating though priced relatively higher than uncoated triple glazing is effective as an insulation product. The double glazing with an Argon filling and without the low-e coating is cheaper but still offers reasonable protection against heat loss.
If you use quite a lot of glass in your building or if the winters are harsh in your locality the use of double glazing with low –e may be the best compromise.
